Claims · Scenario 2

Biochar user

Biochar produced from your supply chain's residue is applied to your soil or the soil of farms in your supply chain. You may retain the soil benefits. You do not own or retire the carbon credits.

Use these

Language that is defensible as-is.

  • We apply [X] tonnes of biochar to [Y] hectares of member farms, improving soil moisture retention.
  • Our fertilizer requirements have been reduced by [X]% following biochar application.
  • Soil carbon benefits are retained by the grower. Carbon removal credits are retained and retired by project partners.
!

Use with a qualifier

Acceptable only when paired with the right scope or evidence.

  • "Regenerative coffee", supported when paired with specific practice evidence and third-party verification.
  • "Supply shed carbon removal", only with the qualifier that credits are retired by a named party.

Don't use these

Will not survive a regulatory or PR challenge.

  • "Our coffee removes X tCO₂e" (if you have not retired matching credits)
  • "Carbon neutral" or "net zero" without retired credits matching the product footprint

Regulatory context

A soil-benefit claim is supportable if it is documented. A carbon-removal claim is not supportable without retired credits. Keep the two separate. EU ECGT treats these as distinct categories.
